Hey all- I'm so sorry I haven't been reliable on posting. Things suddenly started happening with work (once my background check went through I basically hit the ground running so I've been suuuuper busy lately. But! I'm trying to organize my time better so that I'll stay sane, be able to work out and maybe even (gasp!) blog! So, I'm gonna do my best... no promises, but I will try
Anyways, I haven't been very domestic lately, but I can relate an interesting story. On Wednesday I made dinner for my family and totally messed it up. Ok, not totally but a little. But I fixed it! But anyways, so I was making pork and rice with an apple maple sauce and salad. The pork, rice and salad are pretty much unscrew-up-able. The apple maple sauce, however, was a different story. The recipe said to use cooking spray to cook the apples, so I did. But, that left me with a bunch of burned apple pieces. So my mom cleaned out the pan and made me start over. With a half a stick of butter. So much for low fat haha. I guess it did result in better tasting apple pieces though. Oh, and if you want the recipe, here it is:
Melt a half a stick of butter in a small saucepan, add one peeled and diced apple. Cook, stirring constantly for 10 minutes. Add 1/4 cup of maple syrup. Add some raisins. Cook a few more minutes. At this point, if its thick, add something to thin it down. I used orange juice to give it a little bit of a tart flavor. You could also use water, apple juice or maybe even a splash of grapefruit juice. Mix, then serve over pork and rice. Enjoy the deliciousness.
Ok! so I also just finished reading a few books in the Seven Realms Series by Cinda Williams Chima. I picked up the first one, the Demon King, in the Young Adult Fantasy Section of Barnes and Noble (yes, I am an nerd, but I'm assuming you already know that and I had a gift card!). And it was an interesting book... It was good, but not great. There were a few hypocrisies in the writing which I didn't like, but the plot was intriguing enough that I bought the second and third book in the series, which both held my attention more. The series seems to gather steam as it continued, so I expected the third book to be an exciting conclusion. Well, it was exciting. But not the conclusion. I found out that the last book in the series won't be available until next fall! Sad sauce. Anyways, the series basically revolves around the adventures and intrigues of Raisa, the princess heir to a queendom, and Han, a streetlord (leader of a band of street rats) and wizard. Obviously, some of the most interesting interactions are those that occur between the two main characters, but those interactions are infrequent enough in the first few books that they're even more intriguing and addicting. So, while the story is somewhat predictable and the writing is less than stellar, I'd recommend this series if you feel like indulging in some easy and light teen reading. And while I wouldn't put these books at the top of my favorites list, they were a fun distraction. Let me know what you think.
